So, after about 10 months I finally got another blood blister. I woke up one morning, took a shower and when I came out I noticed a slight bump in the usual spot on my lip. I freaked out and pulled out all my treatment methods to try and stop this thing before it turned into a nightmare. Well, it didn’t really work.
See, I never get the prodromal symptoms (tingling sensation). For me, one second everything is fine and the next my lip is swelled horribly. Sucks to be me. I had been taking 2 grams of l-lysine twice a day but recently switched brands and also wanted to see if I could cut back to 1.5 grams twice a day. I think that the brand switch and the lower dosage triggered the outbreak. So anyways, I had a few new treatments stored away since my last outbreak and decided to give them a try. The first thing I used was the Virulite, which is a device that sends infrared light into your lip to supposedly stop the viral replication. Then I used a solution of zinc gluconate and water on the blister as I had read that this will also stop the virus. Additionally I tried Novitra here and there.
Well, nothing was going to stop this monster. I used the Virulite probably almost every hour for a couple days and put the zinc solution on with the same frequency. I even tried tea tree oil, which seemed to help dry out the blister a little but still did not really help. So the fever blister went all out full scab and everything and there was nothing I could do to stop or slow it. I did not use Abreva this time as I had not had any real luck with it in the past and it is expensive as hell.
About 7 days later, I had one large scab and a couple smaller blisters that were not quite scabbed up yet. I forgot that I had bought something a while ago called RMA ointment, which is an ointment with red marine algae and other essential oils, including lemon balm. Well I slathered this stuff on the blisters and went to sleep. In the morning I was very surprised to find that the smaller, not scabbed blisters were completely gone, and in there place was simply just a red patch on my lip. The main scab had no change really, but I felt it was too late to do anything about that one anyways. However this seemed promising for future outbreaks! I read up more on essential oils and red marine algae and I think that most likely the lemon balm was the thing that did the trick. I recently ordered a ton of essential oils and am looking into making a lip balm and ointment to use everyday to try and fend off any future outbreaks. There are tons of essential oils that are proven antivirals against HSV-1 so I will be sure to keep everyone posted on which ones seem to work the best!
All in all it was a learning experience on which things work and which don’t. So far, I do not recommend the Virulite or Zinc treatment for a blood blister that is already formed. They may have uses for prevention but did not work for me to help speed healing. As for the l-lysine I am back to 2 grams in the morning and 2 grams before bed. I am sticking with my trusted brand, Finest Natural.
